Leicester claim European silver

2942847.pngLeicester suffered heartache in the final of the European Champions Cup in Holland, losing out 4-1 to the 12 times Champions Den Bosch.

Leicester secured their place in the final after overcoming English opponents Slough in their semi final match. After a break in play due to adverse weather conditions, the match went down to the wire after 1-1 after full time and extra time, Katie Long scoring Leicester's only goal. The result would be settled after a barrage of the newly formed "penalty shuttles", where Slough had previously been victorious in progressing to the semi final. Maddie Hinch showed her athleticism and calmness in goal, saving both of the Slough efforts, whilst Chloe Rogers and Anne Panter bedazzled the Slough goalkeeper to slot thier efforts in to take victory for Leicester.

The final, played infront of a strong crowd, including many Leicester supporters was heartache for Leicester. After going 1-0 up with a Crista Cullen goal, Leicester really believed this would be their year. But the experience and class of the 12 time champions Den Bosh showed across the 70 minutes. It was only the smallest of margins at times which made all the difference, and coach Chris Mayer believes the scoreline does not refelct his players performance. Mayer went on to say "We felt the time was right to take the crown off Den Bosch but it did not happen. It's not like in football. In hockey, even when you are three goals down, you can get back into the game. It was tiny margins between the teams and the final score did not reflect the game".

The squad would like to thank all those who came out to support the team and also to all those who followed their progress back at home.
